Gum Disease Treatment in Sacramento

Deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) and ongoing periodontal maintenance to stabilize and protect your gums.

Why early gum disease almost always goes unnoticed

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and the early stages are essentially painless. The first signs are subtle: gums that bleed when you brush, mild gum recession, persistent bad breath, or a slightly looser feeling tooth. Catching it at this stage makes treatment dramatically simpler.

Treatment that meets you where you are

Gingivitis (the reversible stage) usually responds to a thorough cleaning and improved home care, that's it. Once the disease has progressed to periodontitis, we'll likely recommend scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning that goes below the gumline to remove bacteria and smooth the root surfaces, typically split across two appointments.

Ongoing periodontal maintenance

Once you've had periodontitis, it doesn't fully go away, but it can be stabilized indefinitely with good home care and more frequent professional cleanings (usually every 3–4 months). Most insurance covers periodontal maintenance, often at the same level as routine cleanings.

Home-care that prevents gum disease from returning

Professional cleanings every 3–4 months handle what you can't reach. But what you do at home between visits decides whether gum disease stays stable or quietly returns. The home routine we coach periodontal patients on:

Use a soft-bristle toothbrush, medium and hard bristles damage gum tissue and accelerate recession. Brush for the full two minutes, twice daily, with the bristles angled toward the gumline. Floss every night without exception, sliding the floss into the pocket below the gumline at each tooth (where the disease actually lives). For patients with deeper pockets, an interdental brush reaches places floss can't. A water flosser supplements but doesn't replace flossing. And consider a prescription-strength fluoride or chlorhexidine rinse for the first few months after deep cleaning, we'll prescribe based on what your specific case needs.

The time investment is small, about 6–8 minutes a day, but it's the single biggest factor separating patients who stay stable from those who slowly slip back.

Connections to overall health

Periodontitis is no longer treated as a strictly oral problem. Decades of research connect chronic gum inflammation to cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled diabetes, certain pregnancy complications, and Alzheimer's risk. The chronic inflammation in your mouth doesn't stay in your mouth.

Managing gum disease aggressively isn't just about saving your teeth, it's about reducing whole-body inflammation. We coordinate with your primary care doctor when systemic conditions and gum disease are interacting (especially diabetes and heart disease) so everyone is rowing in the same direction.

What to expect, step by step

Here's exactly what happens at a gum disease treatment appointment at Cusp Dental, from the moment you walk in to the followup.

  1. Periodontal evaluation

We measure the pocket depth around every tooth, check for bleeding, evaluate gum recession, and review X-rays for any bone loss. This baseline tells us which stage you're at and what treatment is appropriate.

  2. Treatment plan and pre-authorization

Dr. Sidhu explains the findings, walks through treatment options, and submits pre-authorization to your insurance so you know your out-of-pocket cost before any deep cleaning is scheduled.

  3. Scaling and root planing

If you have active periodontitis, we schedule two deep-cleaning visits (one for each side of the mouth). Each visit takes 60–90 minutes; we use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable.

  4. Reevaluation

About 4–6 weeks after the deep cleaning, we re-measure pocket depths to see how well the tissue has responded. The vast majority of patients see significant improvement; a few sites may need further attention.

  5. Maintenance

Once stabilized, we move you to periodontal maintenance every 3–4 months for the first year, then re-evaluate annually. The shorter interval keeps bacteria from re-colonizing the pockets.

Pricing & insurance

We don't post per-service pricing here because every case is different. Call us at (916) 451-4856 for a personalized estimate. We verify your insurance benefits at no charge and give you a written all-in estimate before any treatment begins.

Insurance
PPO plans typically cover SRP at 80% when documented gum disease justifies it. Periodontal maintenance visits are usually covered at 100%.
Financing
CareCredit available for full-mouth treatment plans. We can also stage treatment by quadrant to spread cost over time.

Scaling and root planing is billed per quadrant (4 quadrants total). Localized gum disease may only require treatment in 1–2 quadrants, reducing total cost. Long-term maintenance is the bigger investment; one deep cleaning isn't a cure on its own.

Common questions about gum disease treatment

How do I know if I have gum disease?

Common signs include gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, gums that look red or swollen, persistent bad breath, gum recession, sensitivity, or teeth that feel loose. Many patients don't notice anything, which is part of why regular checkups matter.

Is gum disease reversible?

Gingivitis (the early stage) is reversible with professional cleaning and consistent home care. Periodontitis isn't fully reversible, bone loss is permanent, but it can be stabilized so it doesn't progress further.

Does deep cleaning hurt?

We numb the area before scaling and root planing, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Mild gum tenderness for a few days afterward is normal. Many patients find it more comfortable than they'd feared.

Will my insurance cover it?

Most PPO plans cover scaling and root planing as a basic procedure, typically at 80%, and ongoing periodontal maintenance is usually covered at the cleaning rate. We'll verify your specific benefits before treatment.
